Our tours in Westman Islands
YOU HAVEN’T SEEN ICELAND UNTIL YOU’VE VISITED THE WESTMAN ISLANDS
Vestmannaeyjar is Iceland best kept secret with unique history, beautiful landscape and heartwarming and welcoming inhabitants. Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar) main islands is called Heimaey and it has the population of around 4300. The Island is surrounded by 15 other uninhabited islands (although 6 of them have single hunting cabins) and around 30 rocks and skerries making our seabird life very rich and bountiful.
Most of the islands have steep cliffs that are rich with birdlife and Puffins. In 1973 the Eldfell volcano erupted which destroyed many buildings and the inhabitants were forced to flee to the mainland. Before the eruptions the inhabitants of Vestmannaeyjar were around 5,200. Some of the families never returned back home.
Vestmannaeyjar are the largest puffin colony in the world. The puffins can be seen on the island between April and September.
If you are traveling in Iceland during that time, visiting Heimaey to see the Puffins is definitely a must do! Vestmannaeyjar are most famous for the puffins but there are also more bird species living there. You are able to see the most famous Puffin on the Puffin and Volcano Tour.
Since Vestmannaeyjar are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean you can visit us by taking a 35.minutes ferry ride from Landeyajhöfn or take a flight from Reykjavik. You can book your ferry tickets here
